Romanic finds and early medieval stone slab graves show that the area was inhabited in this period. In the Middle Ages, the village and ecclesiastical center of the upper Frenken valley was called Onoldswil, and it was mentioned in documents as Honoltesvillare in 835. The name Honolt is thought to be derived from the Old High German word Hunwalt, which is composed of hun (young animal, young bear) and waltan (to have power over something). In the 9th century Onoldswil belonged to the Alsatian monastery of Murbach, later to the Froburg family, whose vassals called themselves "de Onoldswilere". Even before the landslide of 1295, the name "de inferiori Onoltzwil" was used, meaning "from the lower Onoldswil". The name Niederdorf, "Onoldswil in the lower village," became established in 1453, while Oberdorf was called Onoldswil until the end of the 15th century. Both villages were acquired by the city of Basel in 1400. The village was always ecclesiastically part of Waldenburg. In the Middle Ages, Niederdorf had a St. Nicholas chapel, which was converted into a dwelling house after the Reformation and was destroyed in a village fire in the 17th century.
